chanson: Pink Floyd – the wall

The song starts at 2:24, fast forward if you don’t want to watch the intro.

Please note that ‘we don’t need no…’ is not correct English, but quite common in some places.
Correct: ‘we don’t need any…’

We don’t need no education
We dont need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone!
All in all it’s just another brick in the wall.
All in all you’re just another brick in the wall.

We don’t need no education
We dont need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone!
All in all it’s just another brick in the wall.
All in all you’re just another brick in the wall.

“Wrong, Do it again!”
“If you don’t eat yer meat, you can’t have any pudding. How can you
have any pudding if you don’t eat yer meat?”
“You! Yes, you behind the bikesheds, stand still laddy!”

    • Driss,

No, old English is unrecognisable to modern speakers. When talking about grammar, sometimes it’s better to look at register. Register is the type of language we choose to use according to the circumstances. For example, it’s important to use good grammar when speaking business English, with your boss or a customer. But if we are in a pub chatting to our friends, we use more slang and don’t always respect grammatical rules, like we hear in this song.

  1. bonsoir,
svp est que vous pouvez me dire qu’est ce q’il dit le prof?
Et dites moi s’il ya des fautes dans le texte.
    merci d’avance.

  2. wrong ,do it again .correct: don’t do it again
teachers leave them kids alone.teachers leave the kids..
yer correct your Do English people speak in this way ?

    • Houria.rami,
in the song, ‘leave them kids alone’ is very bad English! It should be ‘leave those kids alone’. It is, however, quite common in British English, so don’t be shocked to hear it! It’s strange that as a teacher, I would correct this kind of mistake, but when a native speaker uses it, we don’t pay any attention to it.

  3. Bonne idée.

    Que dit le professeur ?
Entre just et another , il y a quelque chose mais quoi ? (that,)
pourquoi “them” dans leave them kids alone ?
Est-ce que Teachers doit obligatoirement être au pluriel ?
