If you butter someone up, you are saying nice things to that person in order to get them to do something that they don’t want to.
examples
“You’re the best player I’ve ever seen!” – “You’re buttering me up because you want me to join the team, aren’t you?”

“He said no? You’ll have to butter him up some more if you want him to agree to it”
