Futur: will and going to

The Future Simple

Le futur simple s’emploie avec l’auxiliaire ‘will’ et le verbe à l’infinitive.

I will go to the cinema tonight – j’irai au cinema ce soir

On peut contracter ‘will’ ainsi:

I’ll – I will
You’ll – you will
he’ll/she’ll – he will/she will
they’ll – they will
we’ll – we will.

Il existe deux façons d’employer le futur simple:

1. Une décision spontanée.

you’re leaving now? I’ll come with you. tu pars maintenant? je viendrai avec toi

Will you answer the phone? – (le téléphone sonne) tu le prends?

2. Un futur qui n’est pas sûr (non-planifié)

I don’t know what to do tomorrow. Maybe I’ll go shopping. – je ne sais pas quoi faire demain. Peut-être je ferai du shopping (ou des courses)

Going to…

Quand on veut parler de quelque chose au futur, mais déjà programmé on dit “going to”:

I’m going to stay home this evening – je vais rester à la maison ce soir

He’s going to watch every match – il va regarder tous les matchs

I’m going to the cinema tomorrow – je vais au cinema demain (ici on a laissé le verbe qui suit, parce que c’est le même : I’m going to go – je vais aller – cette construction est tout à fait correcte, mais pas nécessaire).

Attention:
“going to” est souvent prononcé “gonna” en anglais familier; il faut écouter attentivement pour le distinguer.

We’re gonna have a drink, are you coming? – nous allons boire un verre, tu viens?

    It’s really not easy. But for your information, native speakers routinely mix up futures ‘will’ and ‘going to’ without really thinking about the ‘grammatical’ definitions of them.
