Indefinite articles: ‘a’ and ‘an’
I French we have gender, masculine and feminine, so we need two words for the indefinite article:
le, la.
In English, we also have two words, a, an, but they have nothing to do with gender, only pronunciation. You may have learned that we use ‘an’ before a word that begins with a vowel:
an apple
an orange
an eagle
Attention! We use ‘an’ before a vowel that we hear not what we read. Some words that start with a ‘u’ are pronounced like a ‘y’ so they do not take ‘an’. That’s why in English we say,
a Euro (not an euro)
a uniform (not an uniform)
