Telling Time

One story I often tell in class is about what happened to me one day on the Old Port in Marseille. I thought I could understand the question ‘Quelle heure est-il s’il vous plaît?’, because that is what I had learned in school. However, on this particular day, a young man approached me and said,
” ‘scuse-moi, t’as l’heure?”
and of course, I didn’t understand a word!

This can happen in English too. Although you may have learned in school ‘what time is it?’, be prepared to hear things like:

‘got the time on you?’
‘have you got the time?’
‘could you give me the time’ (couldya gimme the time?)

    Hey Paul,

Nice to hear from you, and thank you very much for the great lessons. You will be happy to know that you’re now famous in France, Belgium, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Madagascar, and a whole lot of other French-speaking countries!

If you keep making lessons, I’ll keep posting them here – I hope it brings you traffic to your site.

Bonjour! Thanks for reposting my video here. I hope it helps it your visitors.

Of course, nowadays everyone carries a cell phone and they can just check their phone for the time, but there still are those who ask for the time.

    Nice website.
