Reported Speech: he said that…

Graham: “I have a new car.”

Reported speech: “Graham said that he had a new car.”

Jessica: “I’m sick”

Reported speech: “Jessica said that she was sick”

Exercice:

Change the following sentences into reported speech:

1. Jane: “I’m going to the bank”
2. Peter: “I’ll fix it myself”
3. Roger: “I don’t know what to do”
4. Jennifer: “I can’t come tonight”
5. Brian: “I won’t be able do it on time”

Réponses:

1. Jane said that she was going to the bank.
2. Peter said that he would fix it himself.
3. Roger said that he didn’t know what to do.
4. Jennifer said that she couldn’t come tonight.
5. Brian said that he wouldn’t be able to do it on time.

  11. profanglais says:

No, ‘that night’ is not correct in this context. We say ‘tonight’ or ‘this evening’ for ‘ce soir’ or the evening of the present day, in contrast to ‘last night’ or ‘yesterday evening’ for the previous day.
