chanson: The Beatles – In My Life

“in my life” is one of the best uses of the present perfect: it’s used to talk about experiences:

In my life, I’ve lived in three different countries
In my life, I’ve seen thousands of films
In my life, I’ve had several different jobs
In my life, I’ve written a book
In my life, I’ve worked as a musician

My life isn’t finished, so I use the present perfect, which is a present tense, not a past tense. It relates all the things that have happened(present perfect) up to this present time.

Here are the song lyrics to ‘in my life’:

There are places I remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I’ve loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more

Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more

December 8, 1980 – John Lennon murdered

On this day in 1980 John Lennon was shot dead outside his Manhattan apartment by an obsessed fan, Mark Chapman. Together with Paul McCartney, he wrote some of the greatest and most successful pop songs of all time. The Beatles probably had more impact on pop music than any other group.

John Lennon was the ‘rocker’ in the partnership with McCartney, and his songs often reflected his political views. He protested against war and injustice, and became tired of the music industry, he decided to disband the Beatles in 1970. After a few solo albums, he retired to New York with his wife Yoko Ono. Many people blamed her for the breakup of the Beatles. I don’t believe this to be so, it’s more likely that Lennon had simply had enough.

I’ve put plenty of Beatles songs on this site for you to practise your English. Use the search box to find them, as they are deep in the archives now!

chanson: The Beatles – Hello Goodbye

this is a good song for beginners! Learn it by heart.

You say yes, I say no.
You say stop and I say go go go, oh no.
You say goodbye and I say hello
Hello hello
I don’t know why you say goodbye, I say hello
Hello hello
I don’t know why you say goodbye, I say hello.

I say high, you say low.
You say why and I say I don’t know, oh no.
You say goodbye and I say hello
(Hello Goodbye Hello Goodbye) hello hello
(Hello Goodbye) I don’t know why you say goodbye, I say hello
(Hello Goodbye Hello Goodbye) hello hello
(Hello Goodbye) I don’t know why you say goodbye
(Hello Goodbye) I say hello

Why why why why why why do you say goodbye goodbye, oh no?

You say goodbye and I say hello
Hello hello
I don’t know why you say goodbye, I say hello
Hello hello
I don’t know why you say goodbye, I say hello.

You say yes (I say “yes”) I say no (but I may mean no.)
You say stop (I can stay) and I say go go go (till it’s time to go ), oh no.
You say goodbye and I say hello
Hello hello
I don’t know why you say goodbye, I say hello
Hello hello
I don’t know why you say goodbye, I say hello
Hello hello
I don’t know why you say goodbye, I say hello hello.

chanson: The Beatles – With a little help from my friends

This is a good song to practise ‘gonna’ (going to)

What would you think if I sang out of tune
Would you stand up and walk out on me
Lend me your ears and I’ll sing you a song
And I’ll try not to sing out of key

Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm, I get high with a little help from my friends
Mm, gonna try with a little help from my friends

What do I do when my love is away
Does it worry you to be alone?
How do I feel by the end of the day
Are you sad because you’re on your own

No, I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm, I get high with a little help from my friends
Mm, gonna try with a little help from my friends

Do you need anybody
I need somebody to love
Could it be anybody
I want somebody to love

Would you believe in a love at first sight
Yes, I’m certain that it happens all the time
What do you see when you turn out the light
I can’t tell you but I know it’s mine

Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm, I get high with a little help from my friends
Mm, gonna try with a little help from my friends

Do you need anybody
I just need someone to love
Could it be anybody
I want somebody to love

Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm, gonna try with a little help from my friends
Mm, I get high with a little help from my friends
Yes I get by with a little help from my friends
With a little help from my friends

chanson – Eleanor Rigby

Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby
Picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window
Wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong

Father McKenzie,
Writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear
No one comes near
Look at him working
Darning his socks in the night when there’s nobody there
What does he care

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong

Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby,
Died in the church and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father McKenzie
Wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved

All the lonely people (Ah, look at all the lonely people)
Where do they all come from
All the lonely people (Ah, look at all the lonely people)
Where do they all belong
