Try to imagine that the simple past in English functions in the same way as the passé simple in French. Shakespeare is dead, so in written French we would use the passé simple: Shakespeare écrivit 37 pièces de théâtre.
Dan Brown is still alive and still writing books: in English we can add this detail using the present perfect, which makes a link from the past to the present. In spoken French, we don’t make this distinction any more. So both sentences could be ‘a écrit’ – the passé composé.

Je ne comprends pas pourquoi on emploie le prétérit dans la 1ère phrase : William Shakespeare wrote 37 plays, including Romeo and Juliet.
et le présent perfect dans la 2ème : Dan Brown has written 4 novels including the Da Vinci Code.
