Verbes irreguliers: groupe 2

Our second group of irregular verbs has verbs the past simple and past participle are the same, but are different from the infinitive:

infinitive past simple/past participle
lend-  lent
send – sent
spend – spent
build – built

these verbs change just one letter -d to -t. Note that the following verbs can be both regular and irregular:

burn – burned or burnt
dream – dreamed or dreamt (pronounced ‘dremt’)
learn – learned or learnt
smell – smelled or smelt

Exercise:

Choose an appropriate verb from above to make sentences that mean something:

1. I _______ him ten dollars yesterday, and I’m waiting for him to pay me back.
2. After he left me, I took some matches (allumettes) and _______ all his letters.
3. It took the Egyptians many years to ________ the pyramids.
4. I’ve got no money – I _______ it all at the casino.
5. I’ve ______ my application, all I can do now is wait for an answer.
6. The room ________ awful, so I opened the windows.
7. I wouldn’t _______ of doing something like that. (expression: inimaginable)
8. You ________ English in America, didn’t you?
