fun or funny?
Many learners get confused between ‘fun’ and ‘funny’. We could translate these two words into French like this:
fun : (nom) plaisir (adjectif) amusant, plaisant
funny: (adjectif) drôle, rigolo; bizarre
what do you think is the right word in the following sentences, fun or funny?
1. I have a great joke for you, it’s really _________ .
2. You’re going to Disney World? Have ________ !
3. He fell and broke his wrist? Don’t laugh, it’s not _________ .
4. How did it go, was it hard? – Well it wasn’t much _______, I can tell you.
5. The _________ thing was that I’d already met him two years ago.
Here’s a joke: (not very funny)
A circus clown gets lost in the jungle as is caught by a tribe of cannibals. That evening at dinner, one cannibal turns to his friend and says, “does this meat taste funny to you?”
Answers to exercise:
1. I have a great joke for you, it’s really funny . (joke=blague)
2. You’re going to Disney World? Have fun ! (amuse-toi)
3. He fell and broke his wrist? Don’t laugh, it’s not funny . (ce n’est pas drôle)
4. How did it go, was it hard? – Well it wasn’t much fun, I can tell you. (ce n’était pas très amusant)
5. The funny thing was that I’d already met him two years ago. (chose bizarre)
